Government installs CCTV Cameras in Conaree and Shadwell

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NATIONAL SECURITY MINISTER Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris has disclosed that his Government is making steady progress in the build-out of the CCTV surveillance system which has been installed in two areas thus far - Conaree and Shadwell.

That announcement came as the Prime Minister was addressing Parliament yesterday (May 23), where he reminded the House that it is being carried out to the sum of $5M with the assistance of the Republic of China on Taiwan.

The installation project which is being carried out in two phases started late last year.

“We have procured the necessary installations of equipment as well as training. These, of course, are being undertaken by one of the largest and the best firms in this area, River Tech. The River Tech Project in St. Kitts and Nevis is being facilitated by local CCTV expert Mr. Errol Wilkinson.”

All equipment for the first phase, which involves Basseterre and its environs, among others areas, PM Harris said, have been supplied and installed in the aforementioned areas.

Dr. Harris thanked the residents of those selected areas for their support in ensuring that the project was supported in order to maintain peace and safety of their environment.

The programme will continue with its build-out over the coming weeks as six individuals were exposed to training in order to provide technical support.

That training was conducted back in February.

The installation of the CCTV cameras forms part of the Government’s push to combat the current crime problem affects St. Kitts and Nevis.

To date, the Federation has recorded 10 homicides and a large number of building breakings, burglaries and larcenies.

The Government and the Police High Command have called on organizations to implement security measures, including CCTV cameras, to better secure their premises.

Just recently an individual was charged after he was caught on camera breaking into a store on Port Zante.
