Ministry of Education Opens Discussions:Basseterre Zone Teachers

By: EMU, Press Release

(EMU) – St. Kitts, May 31st, 2017: Teachers in the Basseterre Zone assembled at the Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium Tuesday 30th May, for the first of three zonal discussions hosted by the Ministry of Education.

As the academic year culminates, the Ministry deemed it timely to host these discussions. Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Education, Mr. William Vincent Hodge highlighted the importance.  He revealed, “The purpose of today’s meeting is to update teachers on the initiatives of the Ministry for the upcoming year, and underscore the importance of professionalism in teaching.”

Topics that were discussed include; the upcoming professional development summer workshops, impending curriculum review, record keeping, examinational protocol and the importance of punctuality and regularity and general professionalism as teachers.

Mr. Olston Strawn, Science and Technology Coordinator gave a brief presentation regarding the important role of teachers within schools and more importantly the relationship between the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) and teachers. He affirmed, “At the CDU we have a high and lofty mandate, and the reality is we cannot do it without your participation, support and involvement.  You are involved in all that we do, in the preparation, invigilation and marking.”

“Teaching is no easy task. You have accepted the calling to teach and we are thankful for that, as well as the time and effort that you give to ensure that our nation continues to develop,” proclaimed Hon. Shawn Richards, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister with responsibility for Education as he commended the teachers for the work that they do during his remarks.

He further stated that the discussions are meant to be used as a platform so that all parties involved directly with schools could be heard.  “There are issues affecting us as educators and generally within the civil service,” he announced.  He urged all offending teachers or some who abuse their authority to think about what consequences their actions may have,

“Students are depending on teachers and ultimately you may think that you are affecting those in authority but you are really affecting the students who have been placed in your care.”

During the question and answer segment, teachers were encouraged to reveal their concerns to the panel as it relates to their duties and responsibilities as a teacher.  Some concerns that were addressed include, but are not limited to, safety and security of students and teachers, the certification of all teachers as well as training and implementation of the OpenSIS school management and administrative software.

The East and West Zone discussions will be held on Wednesday 31st and Thursday 1st June at the Cayon Primary and Charles E. Mills Secondary Schools respectively.
