(EMU) – St. Kitts, June 1st, 2017 --  Four students of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School were recognized as winners of a US Embassy sponsored competition at an awards ceremony held at the school’s campus on Tuesday 31st May.

The competition was sponsored by the US Embassy in Barbados with the aim to motivate/nurture interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) among youth. The contest, which was open to all secondary students in St. Kitts and Nevis over the age of 13, supported the U.S. Embassy’s goal of promoting STEM education as a driver of sustainable economic growth, and as a means to foster innovation and empower youth.

The winners, Safin Connor, Alanni Polanco, Aushauna Bown and Shaniqua Harris supervised by teacher Attilla Arthur, beat out several other schools from across St. Kitts and Nevis to be adjudged overall winners. The group won the competition by skilfully demonstrating how STEM could be used to create a natural mosquito repellent using thyme and lemongrass.

Distributing the grand prizes to the students was the U.S. Ambassador to Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean and the OECS, Linda Taglialatela. She congratulated the students and supervising teacher for an outstanding video submission. She also highlighted the importance and practicality of STEM not only regionally, but globally, “Emphasizing STEM is something the United States Embassy believes in strongly, it is the thing that would make the world a better place, it would drive economic growth, fuel innovation and empower youths not only in the United States, the Caribbean but around the world.”

“Our government understands the importance of teaching STEM in our schools, and the development of the economy,” assured Special Advisor to Youth Empowerment, Mr. Vernon Connor as he delivered congratulatory remarks and well wishes on behalf of the Minister of Education, Youth Sports and Culture.

Ambassador Taglialatela presented a grand prize package including a Celestron telescope, books, and other STEM-themed items to the winners and the school’s science department.

The contest was conducted in each country within the jurisdiction of the US Embassy in Barbados, the Eastern Caribbean, and the OECS.
