BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A clinical bowling performance by Sunil Narine helped West Indies to a dominating six-wicket victory over Asian minnows Afghanistan last evening (June 2).

Playing before a small crowd at Warner Park, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat but quickly found themselves in a tough battle as they were bowled out for a paltry 110 off the allotted 20 overs.

From the first ball of the game bowled by Jerome Taylor, Gulbadin Naib launched an attack, blasting him to all parts of the ground.

Naib and Usman Ghani put on a 21-run opening partnership before the latter was run out in a comical mix-up.

That run out saw the beginning of an end to Afghanistan’s record 11-match winning streak in this version of the game, as they slid to 58 for 8 by the 14th over in a horrific batting collapse triggered by Narine who claimed three scalps for 11 runs of his allotted four overs.

Narine was ably supported by his captain, Carlos Brathwaite, who bagged two for 16 while Kesrick Williams also claimed two scalps.

However, a quick fire 33 from 27 balls by Rashid Khan brought some degree of decency to the Afghanistan’s score.

In reply, the West Indies romped to victory with the loss of four wickets, with Marlon Samuels contributing 35 valuable runs before being bowled by Shapoor Zadran when the home side was just 12 away from sealing the deal.

The middle order batsman had announced his arrival at the crease arrival with a massive six over long-on, which flew out of the ground, as he punished the bowlers on a good batting track with short boundaries.

Chadick Walton Evin Lewis made early inroads into the slim chase, as they blasted 33 runs in only 3.3 overs.

Jason Mohammed and Rovman Powell, the latter who has replaced an ill Kieron Pollard, saw thye Windies home.

Attention will now turn to the second game this evening at the same venue with the first ball bowling off at 7:30 p.m.
