BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS one of the many initiatives embarked upon, students of the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College Jenkins Leadership Course will be hosting a Mental Awareness Walk tomorrow (Jun. 10), which is scheduled to start at 6:00 a.m. from the Independence Square.

Commenting on the walk, group member Athanel Jordan told SKNVibes that within the programme, the participants have to complete two projects; a business and a community.

The course participants have already completed the community project in April, last, when they constructed a bus stop for the Belle Vue community and handed it over to the Ministry of Tourism.

Tomorrow’s event will be the business initiative which is geared towards raising awareness for mental health in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“When we look around, we see a lot of persons who are mentally challenged. And we recognized that mentally ill persons are not only those that we call crazy, but there are other obstacles that are connected with mental health,” Jordan said.

According to the Cohort 5 member, they had decided to go this route to create public awareness in order for people not see mental health as “craziness but rather as a sickness that can affect each and every one of us on a daily basis”.

Jordan explained that they want to stamp out the stigma and discrimination that are meted out to mentally challenged people.

This, he noted, would be done through public awareness campaigns such as the walk they are hosting.

“We are just saying, stamp out the stigma that is surrounding mental health in St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The walk is being held under the theme ‘Unmasking the Real Me!’, at the end of which will a public sensitisation session at the Independence Square from 8:00 a.m.

The route for the walk will see the participants kicking off from Independence Square going down West Independence Square Street, left onto the Bay Road then to Bird Rock (passing RAM’S Cash & Carry).

From there, they will walk north towards the ECCB roundabout, left onto Pond Road then onto Cayon Street and climaxing in the Independence Square via the eastern section.

Persons interested in participating in the walk are asked to pay a $60 fee, which will see them receiving a T-shirt, breakfast, a raffle ticket, water and bookmark.

Interested persons can call 661-8101 for more information.
