BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE driver of the vehicle within which Damian Hutton was a passenger and had died following an accident, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and is currently on bail.

A police report stated that the driver, Nathan Chiverton of Carifesta Village, was granted bail in the sum of $20,000 and has to appear at the Dieppe Bay Magistrate Court on Friday (Aug. 14) to answer to the charge.

At about 9:35 p.m. on Saturday (Jul. 1), the vehicle that Chiverton was driving had reportedly ran off the island’s main road in the New Guinea area and crashed into a tree.

According to the Commander of ‘B’ Division, Superintendent Lionel Moore, “Investigations revealed that while attempting to overtake a vehicle, a rental crashed into a tree at the side of the road in the New Guinea area and one of the two passengers in the back seat died as a result and the other one is hospitalised.”

A subsequent press release from the Police Force’s Public Relations Department had indicated that Hutton and another person were passengers in the vehicle and, after it struck the tree, the two of them were ejected.

Both passengers were taken to the JNF General Hospital, where Hutton was pronounced dead and the other individual was retained for treatment to his injuries, while the driver was taken into police custody.

Damian Hutton’s death had taken to five the number of road fatalities recorded in the Federation for this year.
