PM Mitchell calls for unity in Venezuela’s crisis

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WITH the latest round of attacks in Venezuela reportedly targeting opposition Members of Parliament and Journalist, Chairman of CARICOM believes a unified position is needed from fellow regional leaders on that matter.

The South American country is one of the region’s closest allies and has been a long-standing partner in the area of gas through the Petro Caribe Agreement.

However, hyperinflation and growing unrest in the Spanish-speaking nation have seen it fall from being one of the top countries in South America to one with major shortage of food and other critical necessities.

Prime Minister of Grenada, the Rt. Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell, who assumed the Chairmanship of CARICOM on Tuesday (Jul. 4), believes that “we must also find the resolve to commit to a unified position on the current political challenges in neighbouring Venezuela”.

In a very passionate speech to open the three-day meeting, which wraps up today, Mitchell said: “We cannot ignore what is taking place in a country with which all our member states have strong historic ties.”

He reminded that countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Grenada all share maritime space with Venezuela.

These realities, Dr. Mitchell noted, combined with international records of standing up for “political order, democracy and respect for human rights”, ought to inspire leaders to take a clear stance on the current crisis in Venezuela.

“Of course, in doing so, we must be cognizant of the broad principles of non-interference; the support for the rule of law and order, constitutionality and the respect for human rights.”

Though many have called on regional leaders to do more for the people of Venezuela, many have sought to stay on the back foot when dealing with that issue.

At one of his most recent press conferences, SKNVibes had asked Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris who does the people of St. Kitts and Nevis support, knowing that both sides are being blamed for the unrest, to which he noted that they would not be choosing sides.

Dr. Mitchell intimated that they do appreciate that there is a duly elected government in Venezuela and also the fact that many of the internal struggles are the manifestation of “struggle of power”.

Currently, many have questioned the unification of CARICOM leaders and by extension the body, as they had come in for heavy criticisms in recent times over their regular meetings.

In many regional circles, the meetings have been described as “a talk shop”, while others call it “a club for the privileged which meets regularly on tax payers’ dollars”.

Very often the leaders have been putting forward draft plans for implementation, but many of them do not go past the meetings.
