    Call for dialogue between parties

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Governments of the region have all agreed to encourage dialogue in order to broker peace between the leaders in Venezuela in order to an end the ongoing dispute in the South American nation.

Addressing reporters this morning (Jul. 7) in Port of Spain, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Hon. Keith Rowley explained that the Heads of Government came to a unanimous decision not to intervene in the politics of their neighbour.

The Spanish-speaking nation has been hard hit by falling oil prices and food shortages, as violence continues to escalate between government and opposition supporters.

Rowley, who attended the recent Conference held in Grenada, noted that “the CARICOM position is one where we reaffirmed our position [of] non-intervention and non-interference, while acknowledging and expressing our deep concerns” for the sufferings of the people of Venezuela.

The topic of Venezuela was not expected to be discussed at the conference, according to a statement from the Secretary-General.

But, according to the Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister, it could not have gone unnoticed.

He noted that CARICOM understands and affirms that there is a dire need to improve the circumstances in that country, however, those who are involved should seek to address those issues.

Speaking at the closing press conference for the Heads of Government Conference last evening in Grenada, CARICOM’s Chairman, Prime Minister Keith Mitchell noted that “we reaffirmed our guiding principles to the rule of law, respect for human rights and democracy, as well as the fundamental principles of non-intervention and non-interference in the affairs of states”.

Dr. Mitchell indicated that they are concerned with the difficult economic and social situation in Venezuela.

Further, he stated that they are particularly concerned about the increased violence and polarization between the government and the opposition, and recognizing the need to find solution for the present situation, which ought to be sought internally.
