BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TEN teams from around St. Kitts will lock horns over several weeks to vie for bragging rights at the 2017 Dr. Terrance Drew sponsored St. Peter’s FC Community Football League.

The tournament kicked off yesterday afternoon (July 16) at the St. Peter’s Playfield and will feature Up-Town South, 5 Star, 6 Mill, Floss City, Douglas United, Topstars, 3 West Ballers, Ambassadors and Dieppe Bay

Dr. Drew told SKNVibes that the competition has been in existence for quite some time and he has been the sponsor of the event for many years.

He stated that expectations are very high amongst the various camps and he has commended the organizers for their tireless efforts to ensure that the competition is held again this year.

“I think that those who are involved are demonstrating that they have leadership skills and qualities, that they love the sport and that they are stepping up to the plate,” Dr. Drew said.

The outspoken doctor indicated that he expects to see a high level of sportsmanship amongst all teams and that the event is played in the best spirits by all.

“We expect them to be disciplined, would want to see strong support from the crowd and, most of all, I want the youths to be thinking positively; especially these young men. With regards to what is taking place here in St. Kitts and Nevis, I want them to think positively.”

Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Eight, Hon. Eugene Hamilton told this media house that sports help to bring out the best in any community and such events unite everyone – especially those who turn out to give a helping hand to their teams.

He explained that such competitions assist in sharpening the mindset of youths, while instilling discipline in an entire unit.

Though he is not a sponsor of the event, the Minister pointed out that such competitions bring about a structure within the districts that would not necessarily be there.

“These community efforts are really very useful and helpful in many ways,” he added.

Looking at the broader context of football, the Minister indicated that he would like to see St. Peter’s, like the other two national teams – Conaree and Cayon –perform exceptional and qualify for the Final Four Plays.

The reigning Champions, FLOW 4G Cayon Rockets, is from his Constituency.
