Development Bank lauded for contributing to nation’s health

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (July 20, 2017) -- Medical Chief of Staff at the Joseph Nathaniel France (JNF) General Hospital, Dr Cameron Wilkinson, is reiterating that Government should not be the sole body responsible for the nation’s health and is calling on well-wishers to support the forthcoming Joseph N. France Hospital fundraising concert.

Since the concert was started five years ago, the surgical team at the Joseph N. France General Hospital has raised over $100,000 that has been used to buy necessary equipment not just for the Joseph N. France General Hospital but for the eleven health centres around the island and also for the Pogson and Mary Charles Hospitals.

“We were able to do this from the efforts of the medical students who performed and displayed their talents in song, dance, poetry and drama, and from reliable sponsors over the last five years,” said Dr Wilkinson. “I am happy to say that we had the Development Bank as one of our major sponsors every year contributing significantly to the concert.”

The Medical Chief of Staff at the Joseph Nathaniel France (JNF) General Hospital made the remarks on Tuesday July 18 when he received Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis’ (DBSKN) contribution for this year’s concert from the bank’s Marketing Officer Ms Vernitha Maynard. He was accompanied by Dr Natalie Osborne, one of the doctors in the original fundraising team five years ago.

“Five years ago the surgical team at the Joseph N. France Hospital started a fundraising concert for the institution because we realised that Government could not and should not be the sole body responsible for our health and we all have to play a role,” said Dr Wilkinson. “Our goal this year is to raise over $100,000 and our plan is to purchase an ambulance that is needed to be added to the fleet of ambulances that we have here.”

The concert will be held at the Marriott Resort, Saba Room, on Saturday July 22 beginning at 7:30 pm. He explained that the need to purchase an ambulance stems from the fact that during major events like international cricket, Carnival or the Music Festival, an ambulance is designated on the site in case there is an emergency. This, as a result, cuts into the other ambulances available for covering the rest of the island.

After he received the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis’ sponsorship cheque from Ms Maynard he said: “We are actually well on the way towards crossing the $100,000 mark and that is why we are happy we are here for the cheque that we are receiving from your generous donation to help us achieve that goal.”

Ms Maynard commended the spirit displayed by the doctors and the medical students for going out of their way to serve the needs of the country and noted that the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis is always in a position to contribute toward such a noble venture, as poor health contributes to reduced production by the country’s workforce.

“We at the Development Bank, the Board of Directors, Management and Staff are satisfied and proud that in this country we have a team of dedicated medical practitioners who will do everything in their power to ensure that health services in the country are up to the required international standards, by working overtime to achieve that goal,” said Ms Maynard.

“The last five years have seen these dedicated doctors and the medical students we have on the island perform these fundraising concerts and this year they have promised to raise over $100,000 the same amount they would have raised in the last five years. That is a selfless action that needs the support of all well-meaning persons in the society and we encourage anyone who is able, to please patronise that noble event.”

Dr Natalie Osborne, who was described by Dr Wilkinson as the backbone support throughout the last five years, and who is on vacation from studies overseas, gave a brief background of the event which she said started as a little idea just to fundraise for a particular need that they had at that time and explained that it has today grown into something much bigger and much more extensive.

“We have been happy over the years, as years went by the concert grew more extensive in our sponsorship, and in the amount of persons who supported it,” said Dr Osborne. “So we have been pleased to say that the institution (JNF Hospital) has been supported widely. We get good support from the hospital team, from the Windsor medical students and the Ministry of Health which has been essential in making this activity a success year after year.”
