BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, July 25, 2017 (PLP PR Media Inc.) -- At the recently held Peoples Labour Party (PLP) Constituency Number Three (West Basseterre) Branch general membership meeting, Chairperson the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett announced that the branch was ready to host the PLP/PM Monthly Health Walk participants, whose July 29 edition will end at the West Farm lawn in the constituency.

The Hon Byron-Nisbett, who is also the Peoples Labour Party Deputy Political Leader, told the members that it was an opportunity they needed to make use of as there would be people from other constituencies who would take time to socialise and to meet with their Prime Minister at the end of the walk. She requested that each bring about ten persons to participate in the walk.

In an earlier interview with this media, Senator the Hon Akilah Byron-Nisbett had said: “We guarantee that just like the other walks before, at the end of this walk we will also have a hearty breakfast waiting for everyone. We do intend in Number Three to ensure that in keeping with the charge for healthier lifestyles, that we make the breakfast healthier and we are also looking forward to full participation.”

The monthly health walk is the brainchild of the Peoples Labour Party National Political Leader, and Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr the Hon Timothy Harris who started it ten years ago as the Dr Harris Constituency Number Seven Health Walk to encourage his constituents to lead healthy lifestyles. He is also CARICOM’s lead spokesman on human resource, health and HIV matters.

However, due to the popularity the health walk was gaining where people travelled from all the constituencies to walk with the Prime Minister every last (and sometimes first) Saturday of the month, he decided to open it to other constituencies to allow more people to participate in the health walk on their home turf.

The forthcoming health walk, which will be the second to be held outside its 10-year traditional route in Constituency Number Seven, will cover constituencies Number 1, 2 and 3 and will start from outside the Fire Station in Basseterre, which is in Constituency Number One, at 5:00 am in the morning of Saturday July 29.

From the Fire Station, the participants who are expected to come from across the entire island will walk westwards along Pond Road, then turn south into West Independence Street, on to Bay Road and walk westwards towards the War Memorial.

After the War Memorial they will then continue westwards on to Wilkin Street and on joining Cardin Avenue they will walk northwards and join Cayon Street and walk westwards on to the Island Main Road. The walk will end on the lawns of the lower West Farm Project in Constituency Number Three.

The last health walk held on Saturday July 1 and which was the first outside Constituency Number Seven, had started at the St. Peter’s Community Centre in Constituency Number Eight, and having traversed Constituency Number Two, it ended at the Frigate Bay lawn in Constituency Number One.

“Today was the first time the walk was out of Number Seven, and we have had it in three different constituencies starting in Constituency Number Eight,” said Mr Cante Bowry, Chairman of Constituency Number One (East Basseterre), PLP Branch at the end of the last health walk.

He further noted: “We walked through Number Two and we ended up in Number One on the Frigate Bay lawn. I want to thank everybody for coming out and committing to support the health walk. We look forward to our next walk on the last Saturday of this month, and I want to say thanks to those who took part and request them to join us for the next health walk.”

Chairman of the Constituency Number Two (Central Basseterre) PLP Branch Mr Nubian Greaux, was equally elated by the fact that the last walk went through his constituency.

“To me the health walk is getting better and better every time, and the turnout is increasing,” said Mr Greaux. “The enthusiasm surrounding the health walk is increasing and also the purpose of the health walk is also catching on with folks. So all in all it was a success and we are hoping to make it bigger and better in the other constituencies next time. There will be more people from my constituency take part in the coming health walk on Saturday July 29.”
