BVI, Friday, July 28, 2017 –  Residents in the British Virgin Islands have begun to share their concerns and vision for the Territory’s physical development over the next 20 years as the first round of public consultation meetings for the ‘enVIsion 2040’ project concludes.

To date, the seven member ‘enVIsion 2040’ team comprised of officials from the Town and Country Planning Department, along with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour, as well as technical consultants Environmental Systems Limited and Dillon Consulting visited and dialogued with residents from each of the four main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke in a series of stakeholder meetings.

“We are quite pleased with the public’s response to the initial set of meetings held where we sought to share the findings of the situational analysis, and get public input on pressing issues relevant to the various islands,” said Chief Planner, Mr. Greg Adams.  Mr. Adams added that there were a number of recurrent themes and concerns voiced by residents across the islands.

Common themes include the preservation of natural and historical sites, proper infrastructural development, effective waste management solutions, improvement of banking services on the sister islands, population control, transportation, land development and sustainable land use, zoning, crown land, immigration, tourism development, protecting the natural environment, improving social development and strengthening the agricultural sector to name a few.

In addition to the public meetings, the team has also presented to special interest groups including the Rotary Club of Road Town and the Charter Yacht Society.

The input coming out of the discussions will be channelled into creating the Territory’s first National Physical Development Plan. It is aimed at developing National Land Use Maps and Plans for the British Virgin Islands’ physical development over the next 20 years, and seeks to reflect the holistic vision of the community in this process.

The next stage is the Visioning Exercise which will involve transforming the proposed policies into a graphic representation. This will be done using the various issues raised by the community to shape what the developmental policies could be, and the legal framework in which to operate these policies. In addition, the team will also be conducting an environmental sensitivity activity which aims to identify natural habitats and the organisms living in them to ensure that they are not disturbed during any future developments.

In September, the team will return to the community in a second round of public meetings to present the visioning exercise and have further discussions on the draft policies.

The enVIsion 2040 project is being supported under the umbrella of the regional iLAND Resilience Project to promote climate change adaptation and sustainable land management which is funded by the European Union (EU) and administered by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Secretariat.
