SKNFA pleased with hosting of CFU Congress

Plans in the making to bring CONCACAF Congress to SKN

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) has reported that the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Ordinary Congress, which was held at the St. Kitts Marriott on Sunday (Jul. 30), was a success.

According to the SKNFA General Secretary, Stanley Jacobs, they were delighted to have over 80 delegates from around the Caribbean participate in the meeting.

During the meeting, delegates had cast their ballots in support of Randy Harris to fill the vacant First Vice President position.

Jacobs explained that that post was available owing to the resignation tendered by Cheney Joseph of Grenada.

He stated that a number of other issues were discussed during the one-day meeting, but several others were deferred, one of which was the CFU Statutes.

Jacobs explained that the Statutes seek to bring the body more in line with the reforms that were set out by the world governing body, FIFA.

“Those Statutes were circulated and would be reviewed by the members and would be up for discussions at a future congress,” Jacobs said.

Going forward, the General Secretary noted that their aim coming out of hosting the congress is not just for the development of football, but also to use the sports discipline as a vehicle to create an exposure for St. Kitts and Nevis.

And the Association views the hosting of the congress as the first step in being able to host a much larger congress, which is the CONCACAF event.

Jacobs posited that there are economic benefits in bringing such an event to St. Kitts and Nevis.

“This would include all 41 members of CONCACAF, which include the United States, Canada, Mexico and Honduras. So that would be a much larger number of delegates coming to our shores. Most of them who would be coming to this part of the world would do so for the very first time.

“That is our ultimate goal to host these CONCACAF and FIFA events. Because we believe that the economic benefits would redound to the benefit of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in terms of the hotel occupancy, the monies that visitors would spend while they are here, ex cetra.”

Jacobs noted that officials at the SKNFA are pleased to have hosted the Congress, adding that they are delighted with “the way everything turned out”.
