More charges on the way for captured fugitive

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IT is said that “there is no escaping the long arm of the law”, and Grenadian-born Kathron ‘Cuchi’ Fortune is learning that the hard way as local enforcement officers are expected to lay several additional charges before him.

Wanted in St. Maarten, Fortune is said to have escaped lawful custody in February of 2016 after he was taken to a clinic in Cay Hill on the French sade of the island.

The fugitive turned up in St. Kitts on Saturday evening (Jul. 29) at a Newton Ground beach.

Reports are that residents in the area saw suspicious and abnormal activities and made a report to the police, who subsequently apprehended the wanted man.

Commissioner of Police Ian Queeley, during the Prime Minister’s press conference at Government Head Quarters yesterday (Aug. 2), disclosed that the fugitive would face a number of additional charges to go along with custom charges that would be read to him shortly.

He has already been charged with possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to supply, illegal entry into the Federation and importation of a firearm.

“And like I said earlier, due process will take its course and he is expected to appear in the Magistrate Court shortly to answer the charges that have been laid against him,” Queeley said.

Queeley commended the officers in Division ‘B’ for their swift response that led to the capture of Fortune, while explaining that he was the only person that came off a vessel in the area.

According to the top cop, the swiftness of the police to apprehend the fugitive speaks to the Force’s push to stem the flow of crime and violence plaguing the Federation.

“…that information was acted upon swiftly and it also underscores how porous our borders are and how easy persons can access our borders. And it is from that prospective that we can say here that we had some discussions with the government and given undertakings of certain measures that would be put in place to assist us in that regards.”

Describing the fugitive as a “dangerous criminal”, the Commissioner disclosed that though the man was born in Grenada, he has Dutch rights in St. Maarten.

After arresting the fugitive, local sleuths had made contact with officers in St. Maarten, Queeley said, pointing out that they were very happy that the St. Kitts officials were able to lay hands on him, since he escaped prison while serving time for murder.

“During the time he was out, he is suspected to be involved in at least five murders. They were very heartened by the news of his capture,” stated Queeley.

The Commissioner explained that the fugitive was caught with what he described as a “Bushmaster firearm”, which is a high-powered calibre weapon “that can do lots of damage”.

When nabbed, Fortune had in his possession a bulletproof vest, compressed marijuana and a sum of US currency, among other items.

SKNVibes learnt that three police officers from St. Maarten were on the island holding discussions with their local counterparts. They have since left the Federation as investigations in St. Kitts are ongoing.
