BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) has selected a strong 24-member team for the 2017 Champions Cup slated for India from August 17 to 27.

Those selected are Jamal Jeffers, Adolpus Bentos, Dennis Flemming, Clyde Mitchum, Thrizen Leader, Petrez Williams, Xavier  French, Errol O’Loughlin,  Joash Leader, Delano Hodge, Tiran Hanley, Kimaree Rogers, Gvaune Amory, Javaughn Brookes, Dionis Stephens, Evanceroy Barnes, Carlos Bertie, Vinceroy Nelson, Jayan Duncan, Kevin Benjamin, Zeleon Morton, Tahir Hanley,Yohannes Mitcham and Raheem Somersall.

In a statement released yesterday (Aug. 9), the SKNFA confirmed the names of the players who were selected to begin training for the tournament, which would include the hosts, Afghanistan, and another team yet to be determined.

The tournament, which kicks off next week, will see games being played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, India, under the auspices of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

According to the statement, the competition would be played in a preliminary round robin format, where each team competes against the other, after which the top two would qualify for the finals.

The final St. Kitts-Nevis Men’s Senior National Team will be accompanied by Jeffrey Hazel, George Isaac, Kenneth Douglas and Roger Hendricks.

Head Coach of the National Team, Jacques Passy – who would not be making the trip to Asia - intimated that this is the first time St. Kitts and Nevis would have been invited to play in an international tournament.

He reminded that the invitation was based on the high ranking the team achieved back in 2016.

“…because of the way we are approaching football, because of the Association’s tremendous approach to international football, to allow us to compete all over the world, St. Kitts and Nevis was chosen by the AIFF.”

Pointing to the importance of the senior team competing at major competitions Passy stated, “Our way, our methodology, our vision is to compete internationally, and having this invitation by India, where India is part of our vision, our preparation this year for me is a tremendous honor, and I want to say thank you to the Football Association, thank you to the India Football Federation, for allowing us to be part of this tournament.”

It was during the recent SKNFA Congress that it was disclosed that the local football team had received an invitation to compete in a tournament in Asia.

President of the SKNFA, Anthony Johnson had expressed his pleasure on receipt of the invitation and  indicated it had shown that the team was being recognized for its hard work.
