SKN CARIFESTA delegation to miss Opening Ceremony

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Department of Culture will be sending a delegation to represent St. Kitts and Nevis at the 2017 Caribbean Festival of Art (CARIFESTA) in Bridgetown, Barbados, but the members will not be there on time for the Opening Ceremony.

The Department of Culture made that declaration this morning (Aug. 17) and according to the Director of Culture, Troy Mills, the delegation is expected to be finalized today as a few problems had arisen which caused a setback to their intended proposals.

“The delegation was together for some time, but it took a longer time than we anticipated to have the processes completed for us to be able to go.”

That had however delayed the delegation from leaving St. Kitts and Nevis, but Mills said they are expected to join the festivities on Saturday (Aug. 26).

He declared that the contingent will miss the Opening Ceremony which is slated for tomorrow evening.

“The start is happening tomorrow and we don’t see that we would be able to get there for the start. We are working on leaving and getting there on Saturday.”

In order to travel to Barbados, the delegation, which would include an administrative support staff, is expected to wing out of St. Kitts aboard a chartered flight.

Mills told SKNVibes that also in the delegation, they are looking to have people who would cover the four blocks at the event – Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Culinary Arts.

CARIFESTA, which is in its 13th edition, is held biannually and showcases the region’s culture through poetry, cooking dances, movies, among others.

According to CARICOM, the first festival was held in Guyana in 1972 to provide artists with the opportunity to discuss among themselves techniques and motivations; it should be educational in that the people of the Caribbean would be exposed to the values emerging from the various art forms; and it should relate to people and be entertaining on a scale and in a fashion that would commend itself to the Caribbean people.

But many had criticized the festival for its lack of advancing with the changes in time.

Like their criticisms of the CARICOM Heads of Government, many have indicated that is waste of money.

But Minister of Culture, Hon. Shawn Richards recently pointed out that the festival could not be looked at from a dollar value perspective, since the advertising of the Federation at such an event could not be monetized.
