Tropical storm forces delay in CARIFESTA Opening Ceremony

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

Might create havoc in Windward Islands

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TROPICAL STORM HARVEY has already started to create havoc in the Windward Islands chain as it has forced organizers of CARIFESTA 13 in Barbados to postpone the Opening Ceremony.

The postponement was done out of safety for the participants and patrons because the ceremony is scheduled to be held as an outdoor activity at the Kensington Oval.

A report published on the festival’s website confirmed the announcement, as the Windward Islands, Leeward Islands and the Southern Caribbean islands brace for the passage of three tropical disturbances.

The Opening Ceremony was slated for this evening (Aug. 18) and it is likely not be held tomorrow due to the approaching storm.

Announcement of the postponement was made on Wednesday by Barbados Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Stephan Lashley.

“The national response ahead of the system has forced the cancellation of the mandatory dress rehearsal which was scheduled to be held at Kensington Oval this evening…Immediate measures have also had to be taken to safeguard equipment at the venue.”

Further, Lashley noted that with the impending storm, it is expected that there would be flight delays which would impact the delegations arriving in Bridgetown.

The Minister indicated that a new date for the ceremony would be announced “shortly”.

Meanwhile, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines are on alert, as sources in Barbados told SKNVibes News that they are being pounded by thunderstorms and lightning.

At press time, SKNVibes understood that Barbados was still under a tropical storm watch.

The storm is expected to pass over that island over the next several hours.

Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has reported that “shower and thunderstorm activity associated with an area of low pressure located about 900 miles east of the Leeward Islands continues to show signs of organization”.

The NHC’s statement, which was issued at 2:00 a.m., also said: “While it would
take only a slight increase in organization for a tropical depression to form later today or tonight, upper-level winds are becoming less favorable for development. The low is expected to move west-northwestward at about 20 mph during the next few days, and interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this disturbance.”

According to the NHC, formation chance through 48 hours is high 70 percent, while the formation chance through five days high 70 percent.
