Approximately 200 local children and teenagers participated in the summer camp

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts. – Aug. 29, 2017 – Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (Ross) supported Police Summer Camp, sponsored by the Ministry of National Security of St. Kitts and Nevis, in collaboration with the Coalition of Support for St. Kitts-Nevis Security Initiatives (CSSKNSI). Approximately 200 children and teenagers from the local community attended the camp, which was held at Dr. William Connor Primary School in St. Kitts from Aug.14-27. Ross was the primary sponsor of the summer camp and represented CSSKNS, whose initiatives are aimed at driving effective advocacy, change, and progress in the areas of safety and security in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The yearly summer camp is among the top summer initiatives designed to provide participants with diverse educational programming in a fun-filled and safe environment. The summer camp helps engage local children and youth in activities aimed toward combating cyber bullying and promoting positive development through mentoring.

“We are pleased to partner with the Ministry of National Security and community organizations, to make a positive difference,” said Sean Callanan, dean at Ross. “Through strong public and private partnerships, we can all contribute toward improving the safety and security of the Federation and promote sustainability and prosperity of our community.”

As a leading sponsor of the camp, students and colleagues from Ross engaged with the local youth at the camp’s career fair and spoke about veterinary education and careers in veterinary medicine. The engagement also provided summer camp attendees a unique opportunity to interact with professionals within the field of veterinary medicine and ask questions about animals and animal care.

“Programs like Police Summer Camp are designed to make a difference in the lives of children in the Federation,” said Osmond Petty, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of National Security. “These programs help youth develop confidence and self-reliance, learn mutual respect, and engage in mentoring activities. Through support from community partners like Ross, we can identify focus areas for youth empowerment, advance community development, and foster engaged citizenship.”
