Business in Basseterre back on track

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DOWNTOWN Basseterre is buzzing again with activities as the Federation has fully resumed business today (Sept. 11).

A casual walk in Basseterre this morning provided glimpses of the hustle and bustle that many have grown accustomed to in the heart of St. Kitts, as large numbers of people were moving briskly to get to work for 8:00 and 9:00 respectively.

Proprietors were seen removing protective boards from their business establishments – many of which were up prior to the arrival of Hurricane Irma.

Commercial Banks were opened on time, while supermarkets were all operational from their regular working hours.

On Port Zante, many of the merchants had resumed operations on Friday (Sept. 8) following the arrival of a cruise ship, but closed their doors shortly after its departure due to the threat posed by Hurricane Jose. This morning, however, their doors were opened for business.

Government employees were out as their offices were in full flow today, with the Prime Minister even making a guest appearance on Sugar City radio station.

The Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport has already resumed taking in regional flights from LIAT.

According to Airport Manager Ellsworth Warner, officials at the airport are currently accepting scheduled and non-scheduled flights to the island, including all LIAT flights.

He however pointed out that American Airlines flights coming out of Miami were cancelled due to Hurricane Irma’s presence there, while those of British Airways are expected to be on scheduled for Wednesday and Saturday.

Warner stated that the facility is good for operations because it did not sustain any major damage that would have delayed its reopening.

On Nevis, it is much the same as business is also back up and running.

As was previously reported by SKNVibes, business owners on both islands had closed their doors as Hurricane Irma was barrelling towards the Leeward Islands.

The Government had warned citizens and residents to take extra precaution as the hurricane was a major Category 5 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 185mph.

Currently, Hurricane Irma is causing major damage to the Florida coast – with at least one confirmed dead.
