Red Cross urges caution in donating money for Hurricane relief

By: Jermine Abel, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OFFICIALS at the St. Kitts Red Cross are urging citizens and residents to be cautious when donating monies to groups or organizations that purport to be raising funds for victims of Hurricane Irma.

That warning comes as SKNVibes understands that some individuals have established go-fund pages to raise monies for the victims.

The Director General of Red Cross St. Kitts, Natalie Fough, told SKNVibes that she is not aware of anyone undertaking such initiatives, but warns that people should be careful to whom they would give money.

“I don’t know who have set up funds already, I am not aware of them. I know that we are in the process of doing so. We are setting up our funds; that is the best way to go because we are sending it through the International Red Cross.

“What persons should do is to ensure that whatever organization is reputable…before they do anything, I would tell them to follow up and find out who are these persons. Also, they should not do an individual but rather an organization.”

The Red Cross is expected to have its fundraising drive established today (Sept. 14) or latest tomorrow to garner funds to assist the affected islands, Fough said.

The Director General however noted that the local Red Cross branches are not collecting food or other items to help victim, only monetary contributions.

She is advising people not to drop off any package or canned items to the outlet, because getting them to St. Maarten or the British Virgin Islands would be a logistical problem for the Non-Governmental Organization.

“We are not going to be collecting donations at all, just the monetary fund; because if we do with the other items, it is going to be a logistical nightmare for us at the moment.

“We are here trying to get our stuff in, in terms of supplies, and that we need to get sorted out for the local needs. So, that is going to be a logistically nightmare for us if we are going to be collecting that for distribution.”

Currently, a number of private organizations are partnering to assist the victims of Hurricane Irma in various islands.

A major Category 5 Hurricane, Irma pounded several islands in the Northern Caribbean, leaving some of them partly inhabitable.

The British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten/St. Martin, Barbuda, Saba, Anguilla, Puerto Rico, United States Virgin Island and sections of Florida were hard hit by the storm – with over 15 deaths recorded thus far.

St. Kitts and Nevis was spared the brunt of the storm, only receiving strong winds and rain. Hurricane Irma only caused minor damage to the two islands.
