Media practitioner views police behaviour as unprofessional

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 15-year-old Washington Archibald High School student,  J’Migue Isaac, who went missing on Friday (Sept. 15),  has reportedly returned to her Conaree Village home unharmed.

A police communiqué issued this afternoon (Sept. 20) stated that “the teen returned home unharmed on Monday 18 September 2017, and she was later interviewed by an investigator of the Special Victims Unit, and discharged in the custody of her mother”.

It also informed that Assistant Commissioner Andre Mitchell of the Crime Directorate took the opportunity to thank all who were instrumental in the investigation and also the various media establishments for circulating the missing person poster.

He also encouraged members of the community to continue to support the police in their investigations.

“Let me say to our young persons, your parents or legal guardians are responsible for you, and it is your duty to inform them of your whereabouts whenever you will be away from home beyond the time you were expected home. Irrespective of how you feel or think about your time away from home, they are worried and concerned when you fail to return home when expected,” the communiqué quoted Mitchell as saying.

The contents of this communiqué, however, did not go down well with many media practitioners in St. Kitts and Nevis, who claimed that after knowing the teen had returned home unharmed on Monday and despite their security preparations for the passage of Hurricane Maria, the police should have informed the media of the situation as they did for circulation of the missing person’s poster.

In an email, one media practitioner wrote: “The media was asked to broadcast/publish that a minor was missing. She returned home TWO DAYS ago and there was NO WORD to the same media which still has her picture in the public as being missing. This is quite unprofessional and irresponsible. It is also unfair and insensitive to have the nation worrying and fearing the worse especially in light of the recent tragic case involving Leanna.”

In response to the email, someone wrote: “You are right to raise this and apologies that there was not a prompt update on the same media as per the original announcement. Although an update was made on twitter immediately after the situation changed I appreciate that not everyone would have seen it. At that stage in Grell's absence, an update on Facebook was not possible.

“The police rely heavily on the media to support them in such searches. Now that Hurricane Maria has passed I expect that an update will be provided in due course and in the meantime on their behalf, I would be grateful if you and media colleagues could provide an interim update accordingly.

    “Many thanks in advance.”
