BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – POLICE have made a breakthrough in the murder of Shervin Williams of Godwin Estate and three young men have been slapped with charges for the capital offence, but one of them is being sought after escaping from the Sandy Point Police Station.

Charged with murder are 23-year-old Kyam Omari Veira, Narbo ‘Bongo’ Challenger (30) and Bradley ‘Boone’ Marsham (23), all of Godwin Ghaut.

According to Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Vaughan Henderson, the three men were arrested and charged on Monday (May 2) but Vieira escaped while in custody at the Sandy Point Police Station.

“Marsham and Challenger appeared before a city magistrate today and were remanded to Her Majesty’s Prison. However, Vieira, who was in custody, escaped from the Sandy Point Police Station lockup and police have launched a manhunt for the fugitive,” Henderson said.

He noted that Veira, a fisherman, is approximately five feet five inches in height, fair in complexion and sports dreadlocks.

“Please note that Veira may have cut his hair or changed his normal style to disguise his appearance. He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. Vieira is likely to try and abscond by means of fishing boat. All fisherman, boat owners and seamen are asked to be extremely vigilant for suspicious travellers.

“Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Vieira please call 911 for emergency or 465-6250 for Old Road Police Station or contact the nearest police station,” Henderson said.

On Monday, April 25, 2011, the lifeless body of Williams was discovered lying on a dirt road in the vicinity of Godwin Ghaut Bridge.

According to Henderson, at approximately 8:35 a.m. on that day, officers received a report of a homicide in Godwin Ghaut and officers from the Old Road and Sandy Point Police Stations as well as the District ‘B’ Crime Response Unit immediately responded to the report.

“Enquires revealed that Shervin Williams of Godwin Ghaut, formally of Middle Island, was found lying on his left side on a dirt road in a remote area above the railway in the vicinity of Godwin Ghaut Bridge.

“According to investigations, Williams had obvious injuries to the neck and head that appeared to be caused by gunshot. The District Medical Officer visited the scene and pronounced him dead. The Coroner was informed and gave permission for the body to be removed to a funeral home under police escort,” Henderson said.

He noted that the scene was processed by officers of the Crime Scene Department, who collected a number of items of evidential value and took them into custody for further analysis.

“There are no suspects in police custody at this time, but investigators are following up on a number of leads. Investigations into this matter are ongoing,” Henderson added.

Williams’ death brings to eight the number of homicides recorded in the twin-island Federation for the year - seven on St. Kitts and one on Nevis.
