Basseterre, St. Kitts, 31st May, 2007-- Greening homes, public spaces and hotels does not speak to a new decorating trend but to a method of saving money and protecting the environment. Such topics and many others were discussed at the recently concluded 9th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, in Cayman Islands, sponsored by the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO).

The annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism Development, in which St. Kitts participated, is part of the information dissemination and regional awareness component of CTO's Strategy for Sustainable Tourism. It looks at how member states can design and implement sustainable tourism policies and programmes, offering a regional forum for information exchange on the successes and pitfalls of national, regional and international initiatives.

" For the destination of St. Kitts, the Conference allowed delegates to see the importance of developing a tourism product that accounts for the health and wellness of our communities, its visitors and the environment. All the while, ensuring economic returns, said Unoma Allen, Corporate Communications Manager, St. Kitts Tourism Authority."

The issue of sustainable tourism is felt by CTO to be paramount in the growth of the Caribbean Tourism Industry and that this must be understood by the policy makers in the region.  CTO is therefore contemplating no longer holding this conference on its own but instead merging it with the annual Caribbean Tourism Conference at which Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism, Board of Directors and various CTO committees are traditionally the captive audience

The St. Kitts Tourism Authority was established to provide for the promotion and development of the destination and to also provide for related matters.
