    Farmer's Week 2008 is here!

    ~~Adz:Left~~VIRGIN GORDA, BVI – Acting Chief Agriculture Officer Bevin Braithwaite announced that Farmer’s Week 2008 would begin at 1 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 1, at Paraquita Bay in Tortola.
     
    Farmers’ Week is being observed under the theme “No Time to Wait! Cultivate - The Right to Food in 2008”.
     
    Braithwaite is encouraging the public, whether stakeholders, farmers, residents, or visitors and also school children, to attend the opening ceremony of the annual event and also to participate in all planned activities.
     
    Premier Ralph T. O’Neal, OBE, Minister for Natural Resources and Labour Omar W. Hodge and Seventh District Representative Dr. the Hon. Kedrick Pickering are scheduled to speak at the opening ceremony.
     
    A cultural village will be one of the highlights of this year’s Farmer’s Week and will include a thatched house and a pit where wood is processed and transformed into coal.
     
    Guided tours will also be provided through the cultural village where cultural toys will  be displayed and demonstrated.
     
    Residents on Virgin Gorda wishing to attend today’s opening ceremony can depart the island on Speedy’s Ferry at 11:00 a.m. and return at 7:00 p.m. Ground transportation will also be provided to and from the Road Town Jetty.
     
    Agricultural exhibitions will also be held on Jost Van Dyke on Tuesday, February 5 at 10:00 a.m. and on Virgin Gorda on Thursday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m.
     
    Farmer’s Week was first observed in 1992 under the theme “Eat Local, Grow Local.” Each year the Department uses the week to highlight this vital industry and the hard work of local farmers.
