SKELEC: Sunday Electricity Supply Interruptions Rectified

Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 27th 2012 - The St. Kitts Electricity Company Limited (SKELEC) in a release issued on Monday, stated that it had rectified a number causes of electricity supply interruptions that occured on Sunday.

Chief Technical Officer John Krupski stated, "At approximately 2:11pm on Sunday, a line-to-line fault (two high tension lines that come into contact with each other) occurred on lines connected to the Bayfords feeder, which caused a stage-two shut down at the generation plant. A stage-two shut down at the generation plant is a safety meachanism that interrupts supply to the Bayfords, C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site, SSMC, Cayon, and Sandy Point feeders."

Krupski further stated, "At approximately 2:20pm, electricity supply was restored to the C. A. Paul Southwell Industrial site and SSMC feeders. At approximately 3:13pm, supply was restored to the Sandy Point and Cayon feeders. At approximately 6:28pm, supply was restored to the Bayfords feeder, bringing total restoration to the areas affected earlier in the day. On Monday morning, a maintenance crew was dispatched to the Cedar Grove area to complete preventative remedial work on affected lines."

"Finally, also on Sunday, a transformer in the Bird Rock area failed, causing an outage in the area. The transformer was replaced late Sunday evening and electricity supply to that area was restored. A maintenance crew was dispatched on Monday morning to conduct further repairs."

SKELEC said it regretted any inconveniences that the brief interruption in electricity supply may have caused and reiterated its commitment to provide reliable electricity supply to all of its customers.
