BASSETERRE St. Kitts, March 1st 2012 (SKNIS) - The Department of Youth Empowerment has organized the 25 Most Remarkable Teens in St. Kitts into a youth council charged with uplifting peers and executing community-related projects.
U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer Connie Howard told the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service that the young people, who were honored last November by the Federal Parliament, have fully embraced the responsibility to become agents of positive change in society and have readily agreed to volunteer for different tasks.
She noted that the group recently met to elect an executive and to discuss the way forward on a number of projects.
Desi Browne was elected Chair while DeLonte Lewis will serve as Co-chair. Renicia McDonald earned the position of Secretary and Aldeen Isaac has been designated Historian. The executive body will work closely with Ms. Howard in designing activities for the group.
One such task is due to come on stream at the end of March. The young people are expected to recruit one peer and they will team up with Rotary Liamigua to beautify areas around the Irish Town Primary School. Additional details are being finalized for this activity.
At the meeting, the group also received an update on the outcomes from the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Conference that was held from January 26 to 28, at the Grenada Grand Beach Resort, Grenada. Shaquille Fredericks and Tishanna Hazel represented the Federation at this meeting. The duo participated in a tree planting exercise, painted a facility for the less fortunate in society and learnt about money management, conflict resolution and leadership.
Members of the Most Remarkable Teen Council (MRTC) were exposed to personal development skills. At the meeting, discussions were held on required components important for a professional resumé including objective, education, work experience, awards and accomplishments as well as skills. MRTC members will compile the information and at the next monthly meeting when each person will develop a resumé.
The MRTC is the first step for establishing the Department’s Youth Volunteer Corps.
