Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 10, 2013 (SKNIS): New policies were outlined on Tuesday, during the 2013 reading of the budget, to lower the high cost of energy in St. Kitts and Nevis and create a cleaner atmosphere.
The Right Honourable Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas said that the goal of the National Energy Policy is to transform the Federation into a country where sustainable, clean, reliable and more affordable energy sources are developed and used.
“In an effort to advance this goal, we have continued to explore opportunities where alternative energy and energy saving technologies can be integrated into the daily operations of businesses, households and community life,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
He confirmed that the Government has instituted a waiver on import duties and customs service charges, on a number of alternative energy generating and efficiency equipment. These include: hydrogen fuel cells, wind turbines, energy saving bulbs, solar water heaters, and more. This waiver was put in place to further transform the use of renewable energy.
“Mr. Speaker, our development has brought with it, an increase in the amount of solid waste, produced by households and commercial entities, while there is limited scope for waste disposal using traditional means,” stressed Prime Minister Douglas. “I am pleased to inform you, that my Government has included Waste-to Energy, as a viable option to fossil fuel energy generation.”
The Government is presently considering the formation of the new joint venture initiative between Nanovo Energy Incorporated and a local company, NICOL International Services. The plant will be built over a two year period, in the vicinity of the Conaree landfill.
“The plant will utilize 180 tons of waste per day to generate up to 14 megawatts of power which will be sold to the St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd (SKELEC) for distribution to consumers,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
According to the Prime Minister, in addition to lowering the cost of energy, the project is expected to provide employment options for citizens, as the economy continues to expand and evolve.
