CASTRIES, St Lucia -- The leader of the Lucian People's Movement (LPM), Therold Prudent, is determined to keep a campaign promise to the people of Gros Islet.

In the run up to the 2011 general elections, he not only demonstrated his passion to represent and improve the lives of the people of Gros Islet but also made it clear that his commitment to his community would not waiver, regardless of the outcome of the elections.

Prudent has given a lifetime of service to his community and was instrumental in reviving the community spirit of Gros Islet at a time when sports and entertainment was at low ebb. In the coming weeks he will once again deliver on his undertaking to the people of Gros Islet to establish a Home and Garden Club.

To encourage the cultivation of home gardens, sixty families will be the proud recipients of a complete set of garden tools, vegetable seeds, hand gloves and other accessories. The program is aimed at collectively empowering the people of Gros Islet through the promotion of self-sufficiency and reliance and will be carried out in various stages. It is expected to benefit a total of 500 participants within the next 18 months.

Prudent has long been involved in grassroots community activism in Gros Islet. His most notable achievement was the formation of the Rhum Blanc and Fweydee Club in 1980.

The club was formed to give a sense of hope and self-worth to those afflicted by alcoholism and those immobilized by rheumatism and arthritis, segments of the Gros Islet community that had long been alienated and neglected. As a young community activist, Prudent served on community development committees as president of Black Lightening, The Town Mouse Rebels and the United Youth Organization (Uni-Yo).

In 1983 Prudent was instrumental in the formation of the island's first rock-n-roll band (The Universal Stars) and appeared in a number of joint concerts with notable musicians of the day Luther Francois and Malcolm "Locks" Magaron. Over the years he has also donated generously to sporting and charitable organizations, most recently, giving 100 backpacks and school supplies to economically disadvantaged students throughout Gros Islet.

This passion for service and to be involved in every aspect of Gros Islet life has not waned over the years. It inspired him to write three books, Our Darkest Moment, Glory Days and Tragedy, and the upcoming thriller Saint Lucia is South.
