A Musical Journey with the SCCS!

By: SCCS, Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, July 1st, 2013  --  From the plains of Africa to the hills of Europe, across the bustling cities of the Americas and the Caribbean… it was an enjoyable trip ‘Around the World’ at the St. Christopher Choral Society’s (SCCS) concert on Saturday, July 15th, 2013.  The concert, dubbed ‘Around the World In Song’ carried the audience on a journey through various styles of music, including classical, gospel, folk, calypso and much-loved contemporary tunes.

The sacred tones of ‘In Virtute Tua’ and ‘O Lux Beattisma’ sounded a beautiful beginning to the first part of the concert, which also included rollicking gospel pieces and the Zulu and Zambian songs, ‘Siyahamba’ and ‘Bonse Aba’.  The CFBC choir, directed by Gairy Knight, also took to the stage to delight patrons with the 80’s hit, ‘Africa’ by Toto, while duo Dennis McCall and Paul Clayton soothed them with the sweet sounds of Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’.  The SCCS, who had earlier doffed its standard pink uniform for Caribbean-hued shirts and colourful wraps,  then returned to amuse the audience with humorous Jamaican folk pieces, including, ‘Lillian’, ‘Everytime Ah Pass’ and ‘Sammy Dead’.

Gospel trio ‘Exalted’ gave a rousing start to the second segment, and were followed by intriguing performances by Nigerian group Tomilayo Akinduro and Friends, who seemed to call forth the spirit of the Motherland with their traditional storytelling, dancing, and drums. After a stellar rendition of ‘Finish the Song’, by young pannist Ivorlyn Phipps, the audience was transported to South America through the Latin rhythms of ‘Girl from Ipanema’ (Enoete Inanga and Gairy Knight), and, ‘Cuidado, Piso Mojado’ by the choir.

An Italian duet by Chereca Weaver and Leayon Carty was another highlight of the evening, and signaled the final leg of the concert, which wrapped up with soul-stirring pieces, ‘Let’s Do It’ (CFBC), ‘What A Wonderful World’, and ‘Heal the World, rendered by both choirs, while the bouncy ‘Viva St. Kitts’ brought the concert back ‘home’.

‘Delightful’, ‘Interesting’, and ‘Excellent’ were just some of the words used by the audience to describe the evening’s performances. Many had words of praise for the guest artistes, and particularly for the Choral Society and its able Director, Clyde Richardson. One smiling patron commented as she left the Hall, “I see the choir is quite versatile. I enjoyed the diversity presented here tonight…It was very good”.

The SCCS thanks all its patrons who were on board for the enjoyable evening, and says a special thanks to accompanists Rev. Jeremy Francis, Gairy Knight, Tama Martin, and all specially invited performers.
Stay tuned for another delightful trip with the SCCS!
