BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE first batch of contestants in the inaugural Kittitian Superstar Teen Competition is scheduled to take part in a televised ‘sing off’ on ZIZ TV  tonight (Aug. 8)  with hopes of advancing in the contest.

The competitors for tonight are Bernell Huggins 15, Zarina Frances 18, Kiana Hobson 18, Johneva Blake 13, Shandiya Martin 17, Shakeel Gumbs 17, Lufkin Foster 13 and Jahnel Herbert 18.

The two-day radio auditions were held on July 30 and 31 during ‘The Jump Off Show’ hosted by Guishard on ZIZ Radio via 96.1FM, and over 40 teenagers called-in and the top 16 on both days were chosen.

The judges on day one were Jason Davis, Judy ‘Purple’ Dupont and Guishard, while day two judges were Davis, Guishard and Haile-J.

Speaking to SKNVibes, popular media personality St. Clair ‘Chico’ Guishard, who initiated the contest, explained how the idea came about.

“The idea came about because of the tremendous interest shown by teenagers and the constant demand from them for me to host a show, specifically geared towards teenagers. And it was always a dream of mine to add a Kittitian Superstar Teens Competition to the franchise of Kittitian Superstar. We believe that the talent we have here is comparable to anywhere in the region. And from a competition like this, we could finally get the next Rihanna coming out of St. Kitts.”

“Contestants are allowed to sing with music throughout the television sing-offs to add a little more excitement to the event,” he added.

Guishard said he was very impressed with the level of talent expressed by the youngsters during auditions.

“The two days of auditions were extremely successful and I am very much impressed with the level of talent we had on display. We are in for a very exciting Kittitian Superstar Teens this year. And judging from the conversations I had with the contestants, they are all excited about being a part of the competition.”

He pointed about there are contestants from all the high schools in St. Kitts, including some very talented young males.

“We have contestants from all the high schools competing and, surprisingly, we have some high quality teenage boys competing this year. That has always been a problem, where the girls have always did better than the boys.”

    Tonight’s ‘sing-off’ begins at 8:30.
