BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - JAMAICAN songstress, 28-year-old Tessanne Chin won against fellow member of ‘Team Adam’ in the person of Donna Allen during last night’s (Oct. 14) Season Five battle round premier aired on channel NBC.
For the battle duet, they sung ‘Next To Me’ by Emeli Sande, following which Tessanne Chin was adjudged the better performer by Adam Levine who made the big announcement saying, “The winner of this battle is Tessanne.”
Tessanne Chin earned two non-judged four ‘thumbs up’ from the other celebrity coaches Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Greene while Blake Shelton picked Donna Allen as the better leading up to Adam’s official call.
Donna Allen’s vocal likeness to Tina Turner and Tessanne Chin’s effortless vocal range were highlighted after the battle round.
“You each have something the other doesn’t have and that makes the situation that much more difficult. Donna, Tina Turner is one of the best singers by far that have graced the earth. You do really sound like Tina and it is not in a way that sounds like an imitation ’cause I think you are very much who you are,” Adam said.
He continued: “Tess you make everything seem so effortless. A lot of time people come on here and in order to give a performance like you can give without (not) even barely breaking a sweat and you do it all so easily. It’s pretty astonishing.”
Speaking to the two competitors before the big announcement, Adam said, “I think that you are both world class singers. I think either one of you can win this thing. I really do. I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t believe (it).”
Tessanne Chin is a past performer of the annual St. Kitts Music Festival, having made her debut performance in 2007.
She was slated to return this year after the initial line-up was publicised. However, she was replaced by well-known Jamaican Reggae and Dancehall artiste Christopher Martin due to schedule conflict.
A lot of people are familiar with Tessanne Chin’s music, including popular songs such as ‘Hide Away’, ‘Broken Melody’, ‘Messenger’ and ‘Never Let Me Go’ featuring Shaggy.
The Voice’s battle round continues tonight (Oct. 15) at 8:00 ET/PT on NBC.
