Press Release

Antigua, October 28th, 2013  --  The panel of judges for the Homes, Families and Gardens Festival competition is putting its final tallies together after completing the judging process throughout the island.

Head Judge Carol Faye Bynoe reports that despite a number of challenges the judges completed their tasks at the 73 registered properties in the five zones within a five-day period. Fifty-six persons registered in Antigua and 17 entered from Barbuda.

Bynoe says the East Zone which consisted of areas such as Willikies, Glanvilles, Seatons, Parham, Bethesda, Christian Hill, St Phillips and New Field had the most entries.

Winners of the Homes, Families and Gardens Festival competition will be announced at a ceremony on December 12.

In related news, a workshop this past weekend in Barbuda, which forms part of activities for the festival, attracted quite a number of residents from the sister-isle.

Participants gained further knowledge in garden preparation, plant protection and other topics.

The session was facilitated by Chairman of Agriculture, Lands and Forestry in Barbuda David Shaw, Director of Agriculture Moses John, Director of Community Development Division Brenda Thomas-Odlum and Environmentalist and Head Judge Carol Faye Bynoe.

Meanwhile, registration is now ongoing for another aspect of the festival - the poetry and research competition, for individuals ages 7-20 years. Poems must be written on the theme “Think Beautification for the Nation’s Health and Wealth” while research pieces should focus on a community or a notable person in the community.

Deadline for registration is November 15. Interested persons can contact the Community Development Division at 562-2716 or 562-7243.
