Did Mr. Hype take it too far with “Wuk it”?

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE St. Kitts – ON the eve of a much anticipated Soca Monarch Semi-Finals showdown came the new release of a music video starring one of the contenders, Mr. Hype. But did he go too far?

    The Story of “WUK IT”

In his very revealing story line, Mr. Hype takes his listeners on a journey to Carnival where his friend “Devon” decided to leave the Federation and puts him in-charge of his partner while he is away.

Before leaving the Federation, Devon decides to lay down some rules for his girlfriend by informing his so called “trust worthy” friend that she is not to attend any Carnival activities while he is away.

Instead of respecting his friend’s wish, the Hype boss himself decides to “Wuk” Devon’s girlfriend. And get this, not just in one way but in different styles.

At 38 to 40 seconds of the single, Mr. Hype says: “She plus Carnival equals me jamin’ she to the wall”. Which would mean in mathematical term She + Me = “Wuk”. What a chemical equation for disaster.

    The Video…

One would ask oneself what is the aim of the video, mainly because it displayed a well-dressed man dancing with some articles. But, after going viral on Facebook for a total of four hours, the video was shared 11 times and liked by 45 people.

In the 2:33-second long video, Mr. Hype is seen wearing a tight fitted shirt and a jack strap pants while holding a number of articles including a kerosene lamp and a machete.

It is clear that he was “wuking” these items, because in a number of verses he reiterated and encouraged his listeners to “wuk” anything, even your “best friend’s girlfriend”.

But the question still remains…Did he go too far?

Mr. Hype must however be congratulated for his concept of song which is clearly a favourite for the Grand Finale. While other artistes focused on the jump up vibe for Carnival, Hype took a different path and tried a sexier approach.

But when composing a lyrical piece one must first consider the listening audience, especially children and the effect it can have on them; especially when it is bluntly fluent in the lyrics.

One must also look at the message portrayed through these songs. Whether good or bad you have listeners and music is known to be the number one influence of young people.

But Mr. Hype must have his work cut out for him because if his friend heard what he did to his girlfriend, he might be singing a different tune for Sugar Mas’ 43.
