Grand Masters Band releases 'Who Sen Dem'

By: Jenise Ferlance-Isaac, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER whetting their fans’ appetite a few weeks ago with its title song, ‘Who Sen Dem’, the Grand Masters Band sent them the entire menu on Monday night (Dec. 16), which they called "The Beast", when its album for Sugar Mas 42 was launched at ZIZ Radio Station and Radio St. Kitts-Nevis.

The eight-track album is named after the band’s title song, 'Who Sen Dem'.

Leader of the Grand Masters Band, Wingrove Hicks explained that the fans had been calling on them to release something to whet their appetites because they could not wait until the album was completed.

"This request came from the fans; they wanted to hear something. So we decided that even before we finished the album we would satisfy them," he explained.

Part of the song says: "They wanna take me down, break me down, tear me down again. They wanna see me fall, see me bawl and they want to say dem ah me friend. So me nuh inna nuttin wid de bad minds dem, me nuh inna  nuttin wid de heathens dem."

It speaks to people who claim to be friends with others and all the while, behind their back, they were trying to discredit them.

The chant, which seems to be what the fans love most about the song, says: "I don't wanna hate nobody, hate nobody...but they keep on pushing me, pushing...so I want to know ah who sen dem? Tell dem boys me nuh want no friend."

Even before the first song for the night was dropped, the ‘Grand Masters Addicts’ lit up the phone lines, wanting to be the first in congratulating members of the band.

The first song to hit the airwaves at the launch is called ‘Some More’, which was written by band member ‘Smiley’, who said that it was “for the ladies” and that “the girls always want more”.

‘Some More’ is a groovy tune and it speaks about the way girls always want men to "push it some more" while grinding in the dancehalls.

Another groovy tune released and was also said to be for the ladies, is called ‘Sexy Body’ and was written by ‘Rucas’, another of the band’s vocalists.

One line says: "Long time me ah watch you baby, I want you to push it on me, captivate the mind and body right in this party."

Other songs on the album include 'Musical Bully' and 'Hotter Than Dem' by Rucas and 'Come Gimme That' and 'One Finger' by Smiley.

Track eight of the album comprises chants and rhythms composed by the band for the fans' enjoyment.

One band member said that they went out of their way to put the album together and that “we really work hard on it".

Another member, in explaining how the band manages to keep going apace, said: "It is the type of personalities we have in the band. We are determined guys, we always seem to gel more and bring out the best in us when the pressure is on."

He said that Hicks had devised ways in which their best products would always go forward.

Hicks disclosed to this publication that the band has not yet decided on a Road March contender, but added that, based on their fans’ responses, it just might be 'Who Sen Dem'.

The album goes on sale from today (Dec. 18) and could be found at the BCA outlet on Central Street and Tony Liquor Centre at Wigley Avenue in De Village.
