Hypertension level still high in SKN…says Dr. Martin

BASSETERRE St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH there are numerous outreach programmes being undertaken by the Ministry of Health, hypertension still continues to affect many people in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Patrick Martin revealed to SKNVibes that the levels are still high in the Federation and other outlying islands.

“St. Kitts and Nevis, like the rest of the Eastern Caribbean, has a high rate or prevalence of high blood pressure in adults. A study from 2008 found up to one-third of the adults with high blood pressure,” he stated.

Hypertension or blood pressure as regularly called, can affect anyone irrespective of their age, gender or ethnicity, but with the massive sensitisation drive the Ministry has ongoing the number is expected to drop over time.

“There is not one soul in St. Kitts and Nevis who doesn’t know about HIV, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer because of the amount of promotions and articles that you print,” he added.

The CMO stated that people are adhering favorably to the outreach programmes, which are held at food fairs and other events on a frequent basis throughout the Federation.

“A number of them we find satisfactory. Health personnel from the Ministry make presentations to churches, small groups, factories and other places.

“People in St. Kitts always have information and we welcome that, and we are more than happy to respond to their needs,” Dr. Martin explained.

Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to the blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your arteries, the higher your blood pressure.

High blood pressure is a common condition in which the force of the blood against your artery walls is high enough that it may eventually cause health problems, such as heart disease.

An individual can have high blood pressure (hypertension) for years without any symptoms.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure increases your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.

It typically develops over many years; fortunately, high blood pressure can be easily detected. And once you know you have high blood pressure, you can work with your doctor to control it.
This ailment has been called the most strenuous one affecting humans because it can lead to more severe ailments such as damaged organs, as well as several illnesses, such as renal failure (kidney failure), aneurysm, heart failure, stroke, or heart attack

The normal level for blood pressure is below 120/80, whereby 120 represents the systolic measurement (peak pressure in the arteries) and 80 represents the diastolic measurement (minimum pressure in the arteries).

Blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called pre-hypertension (to denote increased risk of hypertension), and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered hypertension.

Basic household treatment for hypertension includes Beetroot, Fennel, Cabbage, Lettuce, Radishes and Carrots. And one way of reducing the treat of hypertension is by maintaining a healthy weight, reduce salt intake, reduce alcohol intake, and reduce stress.
