PM Douglas supporters show solidarity; express satisfaction with his leadership

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a show of solidarity and support, Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas was met with embraces and kisses of adoration earlier this afternoon (Jan. 29) as he disembarked his vehicle to enter Government Headquarters.

Before Douglas’ arrival, SKNVibes met dozens of his fans and supporters lining the outer corridor of the building and speckled across the adjacent sidewalk. When inquiries were made as to why they were there, one supporter who identified herself as ‘Ellia’ informed that the crowd, in response to comments made by the Hon. MP elect for Constituency #2, is publicly expressing its support for the Prime Minister.

“I am here to stand firm with the Prime Minister; the only Prime Minister in the Caribbean who can run this country well.”

At approximately 2:50 this afternoon, the vehicle in which PM Douglas travels came around the corner of Central and Church Streets and headed southwards. It was then that his aficionados rushed into the street armed with their balloons, placards and a trophy, flocking around the vehicle and embracing him as he exited.

The hugs and kisses that the PM received were reinforced with shouts of appreciation and love.

“We love you Prime Minister! Douglas is our Obama,” many shouted.

As PM Douglas walked into Government Headquarters, he was heavily flanked by the enthusiasts who continued to sing his praises.

Speaking exclusively with SKNVibes, Dr. Douglas said, “I feel very good about the support”.

Regarding statements made by Minister Astaphan, however, Dr. Douglas stressed that St. Kitts and Nevis is a democratic country and persons are welcomed to express their opinions.

The country’s leader and leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party said there is a process which one could complete if he or she is not pleased with the leadership of the country.

“I continue to make the point that we are living in a democracy. The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is run along strong democratic principles. Those who have difficulties, they are free to speak out. Those would wish the leadership of the party to be examined, there is a process to be followed. The party constitution speaks of that process...a resolution can be brought to the national executive. The national executive of the party will always,  I am sure, take wisdom from the resolution if it is passed...”

Minister Astaphan called for Prime Minister Douglas to relinquish his post as leader of the country.  Astaphan said “most of the negative perceptions and feelings towards the Labour Party revolve around Dr. Douglas himself.”

Dr. Douglas stated that he has no intention of resigning.

“The constitution speaks to...how the Prime Minister is appointed. If there are those who have a problem with the Prime Minister, they just simply come together, they go to the Governor General, indicate who they have maximum support for and the Governor General will in turn, I am sure he will call me, as is expected from the Constitution...I think it will be two or three days will be given to me to make a decision...that is to step down or to call a general elections by dissolve of the house. I don’t intend to do that at all.”

Prime Minister Douglas thanked his supporters for their loyalty and words of encouragement after which he went about his usual business.
