January 6, 2014 -- The Cuban Embassy and the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda will host the presentation of the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase Fourth Edition. The film festival will run from Friday January 10th to Sunday January 12th and will feature 22 films from 16 Caribbean countries.
The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase has been touring the region since 2007 and this will be its second exhibition in Antigua and Barbuda. Among the countries represented in the 4th Edition of The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase are Haiti, Guadeloupe, Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba, Jamaica, Venezuela, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic and Antigua & Barbuda. The films include documentaries, fiction and a wonderful collection of animated films and shorts.
One of the highlights of the festival is the documentary out of Cuba and the United States, “Traces of the Trade”. Filmmaker Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide.
Other films include “Rain” a feature film from Bahamian director Maria Govan and “Classical Steel” a Trinidadian documentary highlighting the importance of classical music in the development of the steelband. Also on the lineup is “Rise Up” a Jamaican documentary, which journeys into the heart of Jamaica’s flourishing underground music scene. There is also the Haitian documentary “An Unwelcome Lot” looking at the Syrian/Lebanese experience in Haiti. The Film Showcase also includes a special screening of the critically acclaimed Antiguan film “The Skin” on Saturday January 11th.
The regional film festival aims to bring Caribbean audiences closer to the knowledge and acknowledgement of their own reality, history and culture through cinema and to encourage an interest in productions by Caribbean filmmakers.
The Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase is sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Film Art and Industry (ICAIC), UNESCO, UNICEF, TELESUR, Republic Bank Ministry, and the Cuban Ministry of Culture, with the collaboration of CARICOM and Caribbean academic institutions. The festival coordinator in Antigua is HAMAfilms.
The festival opens to the general public on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda on Long Street. Admission to all the screenings is free.
