LPM Welcomes Announcement of Geothermal Exploration

CASTRIES, St Lucia (February 3, 2014) – The Lucian People’s Movement (LPM) has responded positively to the government’s announcement this weekend that it plans to seriously revive efforts to explore the use of geothermal energy in Saint Lucia, and the party hails this decision as a step in the right direction towards the attainment of energy sufficiency and independence.

In recalling its advice to the Kenny Anthony administration last year, after the decision was made to appoint Mr. Calixte George Jr. as the attaché to the Prime Minister, the LPM argued that it “would have been very supportive of Dr. Anthony had he demonstrated the foresight to make better use of Mr. George’s training and skills as an electrical and computer engineer by employing him within the Ministry of Public Service, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology.”

The party went on to state that perhaps Mr. George “could have been given the responsibility of heading a special unit within that ministry, specifically devoted to uncovering advances in geothermal and solar energy technologies that could lower the cost of powering government offices, private homes, businesses, playgrounds, and streets, thus revolutionising an energy source on the island that would generate thousands of new and sustainable jobs.”

Such a move, the LPM further argued would not only have  "signalled to young people that their government was serious about investing in their skills to advance the development of the country, but could also have been a political appointment that Dr. Anthony would not have to justify" in terms of its net value to the country.

However, while it remains unclear whether Dr. Anthony intends to make better use of Mr. George’s skills by relocating him to the Ministry of Public Service, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology to assist with this project, the LPM commends the government of Saint Lucia for quietly taking its advice to explore the use of geothermal energy, even if publicly it gives the impression that the contributions of the LPM are irrelevant.
