SKN MMA fighters prove they have an ‘Iron Fist’

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - YOUNG amateur Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters from St. Kitts and Nevis were on show Friday evening (Jan. 31) in Sandy Point as they participated in the inaugural Iron Fist Tournament.

The event, which featured a night of brutal and entertaining action, kicked off with a martial arts demonstration by members of the Zen Martial Arts School from Sandy Point who showed some basic martial arts skills and self dense techniques which included one of the participants being attacked with a machete and defending himself.

The first fight of the evening saw a lightweight battle between Darrell ‘All Out’ Thomas and Jabari ‘The Born Assassin’ French. The battle was a one-sided bout with French using his height advantage over Thomas who did not appear to be a threat.

After a strong first round and a similar second round, French was declared the winner by the referee on ‘strikes’, leaving his opponent unconscious on the floor of the ring.

Second fight was between Keith ‘The Crippler’ Edwards and Dequan ‘The General’ Richards but the encounter ended prematurely.

Edwards had obvious difficulty seeing with the headgear he was wearing and subsequently refused to wear it. After minutes of protest Edwards left the ring to a chorus of boos from the respectable size crowd that had gathered to witness the event. Richards was declared the winner by disqualification.

Fight number three saw Deejan ‘The King of Varja’ Grant battling Miguel ‘War Head’ Hendrickson in an encounter that ended after only seconds after the first round had begun. Though Hendrickson did not fall, a left hook from Grant caused him to lose his footing and he was deemed unfit to continue with the fight and Grant was declared the winner.

The fight was followed by an intermission period that included a bench press competition and an entertainment package that featured the likes of Hot Rod and Fantastic Thunder who both performed their hit tunes from Sugar Mas 42.

Following the intermission, Serfert ‘Spike’ Vaughn faced Lesroy ‘Not Nice’ Versailles in a Middleweight bout which saw both fighters taking a defensive approach, waiting for the other to make the first move. The fight however reached a hight point in the second round with both fighters trading blows before the battle came to an end with Versailles being declared the winner on “strikes”.

Following the battle both fighters received rousing applause from the audience for the sportsmanship they displayed via embrace following the fight.

The main event for the evening was a Light Heavyweight battle featuring Old Road’s Nikal ‘The Surgeon’ Spencer and St. Peters’ Adrien ‘The Hulk’ Williams. Both fighters weighing over 200 pounds with Williams having a height and 20-pound advantage.

Both fighters started the battle very conservatively with Spencer trying to use his speed to his advantage, dodging a few of Williams’ potentially disastrous punches.

Williams however tried to use his strength to give him the upper hand, aggressively throwing some heavy boxes.

The encounter lasted the full five rounds with both fighters showing immense strength, stamina and toughness, leaving the judges to declare the winner. Two of the three judges scored Spencer as the winner of the bout.

The Special guest referee of the evening was St. Kitts and Nevis’ first professional MMA fighter Tija Stanley who told SKNVibes that he was happy to see an event of this nature taking place in the Federation and that similar events would help to grow the sport and attract more fighters.
