IS MMA the next big sport in the Federation?

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN a Sport for the rough and tough, could the ancient sport of Martial Art (MA) become the next top sport in the Federation?

This was the question SKNVibes Sports sought to have answered at the recently held ‘Iron Fist’ Mixed Martial Arts tournament at Sandy Point’s Hard court on Saturday (Feb. 1) evening.

Speaking exclusively with SKNVibes one of the organizers Juvel Webster explained that this tournament is one which was direly needed after it was found that the love for the sport of Boxing was on the way out of the Federation.

He added that it was several members of the Sandy Point area who came up with the initiative to birth the sport locally which they found to be a bit of a complexity task.

“It all started from a bunch of guys playing around watching the sport on television and we all wanted to take part in the sport and the problem we have is that we are here and the UFC is there. So we said why not bring the UFC to St Kitts and we have realize over the years that boxing is not like the top sport that we had long ago like cricket and football. During the past couple of years boxing has decreased.

Webster, further explained that, the sport of MMA gives all interested persons an opportunity to be active and competitive at a sport other than boxing. He noted that it could also be done for persons who are not interested in being a part of competitive tournament.

The tournament, which featured young fighters from gyms and martial arts schools from around the country, saw a very large turnout for a sport which is only in its second tournament within the Federation.

He lamented that the weather also played its part in the turnout of spectators which was expected to be larger than what was present for the inaugural tournament.

“If the rain wasn’t a factor tonight the turnout would have been larger and you see how involved and energetic the crowd is and everybody seems to be enjoying themselves.”

He explained that the organizers of the event are very pleased with the way the sport has spread thus far in the short amount of time that the event has been on the island. While noting this, he said they are working to have the sport spread throughout the entire Federation, not limiting the sport to the Sandy Point area.
