No formal response from the Governor General yet

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Unity Movement has indicated that since its delivery of a letter to the Governor General declaring their support for Dr. Timothy Harris for Prime Minister of the Federation, they have not yet received a formal response from the Head of State.

SKNVibes was informed by members of Team Unity that the letter was delivered to the office of the Governor General on Thursday morning (Feb. 13).

The correspondence - signed by the six elected Opposition Members in the Federal Parliament - calls upon the Governor General - His Excellency Sir Edmund Lawrence - to appoint Dr. Harris as Prime Minister of St. Christopher and Nevis as, according to their explanation, he commands the support of the majority of elected Representatives in the House.

The letter suggests that Section 52(2) of the Constitution of the Federation provides for His Excellency to effect such a change.

“We, the undersigned, being the majority of the duly elected Representatives of the National Assembly of the Federation of St. Christopher & Nevis and following upon our correspondence to Your Excellency dated 1st March 2013 and 11th June, 2013, hereby formally advise Your Excellency that we support the Honourable Dr. Timothy Harris for the position of Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis.

“Consistent with Your Excellency’s duty under section 52(2) and related provisions of the Constitution of St. Christopher and Nevis, we call on Your Excellency formally to appoint the Honourable Dr. Timothy Harris as Prime Minister of St. Christopher and Nevis as he is the only member of Parliament who now commands the majority of support of the elected Representatives.”

The Unity members expressed their hope that the Governor General would have an audience with them but Dr. Harris told this publication that to date, “in terms of the letter, we have not yet received a formal response”.

Today marks one week since the letter was delivered.
