BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE protest action being staged by the Unity Movement seems to be gaining momentum and according to leaders of the initiative, their message is being pellucidly conveyed.

After a two-day break, the Unity Movement members and their supporters yesterday (Feb. 28) picketed outside the workplace of the Speaker of the National Assembly - the Honourable Curtis Martin - the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank.

At about 6:45a.m. - SKNVibes understands - people began gathering with their placards and by the 8:00a.m., in excess of 60 persons had gathered in the area to picket. This was confirmed by Team Unity Leader the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris and member Lindsay F. Grant.

Dr. Harris explained that the Speaker arrived for work sometime after the bank’s doors had been opened to the public and he further explained that when he arrived, “we were able to greet him with our placards and send a message to him that we mean business, the protest will continue, that we are demanding that he does the right thing.

“The crowds came with their placards, he read the message and basically he scampered to the bank trembling, accompanied by armed police officers.”

And sometime after 9:00 a.m., the protest shifted to Cayon Street east where - according to Dr. Harris - the sensitisation drive continued. He said he is encouraged by the drivers who passed the peaceful protest and “honk 4 unity” as some of the placards indicated.

“We are continuing out protest action in support of democracy...We will continue to protests; the protests will not stop. We intend to continue them as often as is necessary until the desired action takes place. And as you see here, while we are gathered here, people are passing tooting their horns giving affirmation and support for our action, indicating that this kind of action is one which the public is in support of. And so we will continue that.”

Commenting on the increase in support, Grant expressed that “for us that is significant” and he reiterated the call for the Speaker to have the 14-month-old Motion of No Confidence tabled in quick time.

“We are calling on the Speaker of the National Assembly Curtis Martin to have the Motion placed on the table and we think that the judgment of Justice Ramdhani is very clear and unequivocal in its terms and it basically says that the Speaker ought to do the right thing and table the Motion when the Parliament is called again. And so if it takes us being here everyday to protest at his workplace - the St. Kitts Nevis National Bank - we will do so until we get justice for the people...and until democracy prevails and until the rule of law and the Constitution is followed.”

Yesterday, SKNVibes made attempts to contact Speaker Martin for a comment on the recent action of the Unity Movement but the attempts were futile.
