Speaker slides past protesters

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SPEAKER of the National Assembly, the Hon. Curtis Martin - for the most part - was able to avoid protesters stationed outside his workplace the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank this morning (Mar. 3).

Today’s protest is part of action being taken by the Unity Movement within the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis which has long been calling for the 14-month-old Motion of No Confidence to be tabled in the Federal Parliament in quick time.

During days past, the picketers - bearing placards - would have met the Speaker as he arrived for work and would openly express their views on the Motion as he passed them to enter the doors of the Bank.

SKNVibes was present on Central Street - just in front of the Bank - this morning where the picketers were assembled, some of whom - by virtue of their discussions - appeared anxious in awaiting Speaker Martin’s arrival.

At about 9:25 a.m., when the placards were being loaded into the back of a privately-owned vehicle and when many of the picketers had already abandoned their posts, the Speaker arrived in his vehicle and - being accompanied by security personnel - quickly made his way into the Bank.

Prior to the Speaker’s arrival however, SKNVibes spoke with Team Unity Leader the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris who said he believes the message of the Team is being conveyed to the Speaker.

“He (the Speaker) understands that the protests will continue for as long as he continues to keep the Motion in abeyance.

“We see each time here new faces being added to the protest and I think that it’s a good sign. It shows that even if some didn’t make it, others basically are being motivated to come and show solidarity on an important issue.”

Today, this publication made attempts to contact the Speaker at the St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla National Bank but was told that he was not at his desk.
