BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A veteran calypsonian earned the right to be named Trinidad and Tobago’s newest Monarch on Sunday (Mar 2) night having competed against the field of 12 of his peers.
According to the Jamaican Observer, Roderick ‘Chuckey’ Gordon won himself the TT$1 000 000 prize in the Calypso Monarch competition “that likely signals the end of an impressive career by a longstanding veteran and former multiple winner”, the media house stated.
“Gordon, who has described himself as the ‘last badjohn of Calypso’ overcame a strong field of 12 that included three former monarchs, to lift the title with his political rendition ‘Wey You Think’ and the social commentary ‘Wedding of De Century’,” the observer reported.
The news entity also reported that Sunday night’s results might have signaled the end of a long standing career in the art for Dr Hollis Liverpool, who was hoping for ninth crown, but placed fourth with his singles, ‘Ah Miss De Bards’ and "De Guest List".
But it was not all good for the defending monarch Eric ‘Pink Panther’ Taylor who placed one spot from the bottom spot which went to Roger "Bodyguard" Mohammed, “whose song ‘False Papers’ had generated much controversy leading up to the competition”, the media house reported.
Kurt Allen, who is a former sinner, placed second with his song ‘Sweet Sizzling Summer’ and ‘The Lost Psalm Of King David’ while crowd favourite Selvon ‘Mistah Shak’ Noel took the third spot with his political commentary ‘Bois’ and ‘Crime Round De Clock’.
Allen and Noel received prizes of TT$500,000 and TT$250,000 respectively.
