Press Release

March 11, 2014  --  Never before in the history of Antigua & Barbuda has a political party held a rally focused on empowering the women of the country. This Thursday, the UPP will host the Our Voice, Our Country, Our Future rally featuring strong, independent female voices.

The speakers will include Eutha Meade, Angela Payne Maginley, Chaniel Jackson, Janice Powell, Senator Malaka Parker, Shawn Nicholas, Senator Joanne Massiah and Minister Jacqui Quinn-Leandro. The only male speaker will be the Honourable Prime Minister. There will be a surprise guest speaker.

"In Caribbean societies, women, mothers and grandmothers carry much of the burden, but, are rarely lifted up, praised and thanked," said Minister Quinn-Leandro. "We choose to honour the women of Antigua & Barbuda on Thursday with this historic event. Never before has a political party in the history of our country held an event like this."

"From school meals to school uniforms for our children to legislation that allows us to garnish wages of deadbeat dads to the People's Benefit Program that helps low income mothers provide food for their families, the UPP has put women and families first," the Minister continued. "Contrast that with an ALP that drives away their prominent women and features a candidate that was found guilty of battering a woman. If the women of this country speak with one voice, we can change things and that is what Thursday is all about."

"I reach out to all the women of this country - be they UPP, ALP or independent - to join us this Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Command Centre for this historic event," Minister Quinn-Leandro concluded.

While women will be highlighted, all are welcome at this special rally on Thursday at 7:30 pm at the Command Centre.
