March 18, 2014  --  Five Antiguan and Barbudan students recently commenced their first year of medical studies in the Republic of Cuba having completed their first year of preparatory studies in Spanish and the Sciences.

The five students are the recipients of five additional scholarships granted by the Cuban Government in 2013 in addition to the four scholarships granted annually for medical studies.

Four of the five students; Abosede Winter, Geron Ledeatte, Candacy Johnson and Patricia Harewood are pursuing studies in medicine, while Jaleel Allen is pursuing studies in dentistry.

“We are delighted we have been given the opportunity to pursue our dreams and we thank the government of Antigua and Barbuda for negotiating with the Cuban government to give us the five additional scholarships.  We are committed to doing our best and eager to return to Antigua and Barbuda to make our contributions to improve the healthcare delivery system,” noted Jaleel Allen speaking on behalf of the students.

Cuban Ambassador, Gustavo Veliz Olivares says that Cuba values the relationship with Antigua and Barbuda and the directives for granting the scholarships came directly from President Raul Castro following discussions with Prime Minister Spencer.  “Cuba believes that cooperation like these strengthens the relations between our countries.  This is also a basis for us granting six scholarships in medicine for the 2014/2015 academic year,” Ambassador Gustavo said.

Commenting on the progress of the students, Prime Minister Spencer said that his government is delighted when students excel and it is his pledge to expand the scholarship programme during his government’s next term in office.  This he says will include emphasis on training in technical areas such as refrigeration, plumbing and air condition assembly and repairs.

“We will also be approaching some of the major universities in North America and Europe to partner with government to offer scholarships in the sciences in addition to tapping into more of our diplomatic partners for similar programmes.  The education of our young people is paramount to my administration and we will continue to make it a major policy initiative in our next term,” said PM Spencer.
