V.C BIRD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - Today [Thursday] Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Baldwin Spencer, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation the Hon. John Maginley and other dignitaries inspected the new facilities at V.C Bird International Airport. For years, the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has been working on creating a new gateway for international visitors to our island. This project is now in its final phases.

The international airport shapes travellers’ first impressions of our country. The existing facility has served us well for many years, but it is important that Antigua and Barbuda has a world-class international airport. The new terminal delivers a key government manifesto commitment, and when completed it will reinforce the country's status as a regional and international leader in business and leisure travel.

During the course of their visit today, the Prime Minister and those accompanying him observed the current state of construction, which is over 70% complete. Four air bridges are largely completed. Elsewhere, elevators and escalators are being installed, as is the central air conditioning system. Automated baggage handling facilities are awaiting final completion, and carousels for collecting baggage will be ready in the near future.

The new airport terminal will provide improved facilities for customs and immigration, ensuring that visitors and residents alike are able to move quickly and easily through the airport upon arrival. The quality of security apparatus will also be improved, which will enable departing passengers to pass through security procedures faster and into the comfortable new departure lounge. Other cutting edge facilities for baggage handling and retail spaces will further improve the passenger experience. Taken together, these improvements will considerably relieve the stresses sometimes associated with air travel.

The Prime Minister was delighted with the progress that has been achieved, and said he was proud that his government had been able bring about this and other improvements in Antigua and Barbuda’s transport infrastructure.
