BRADES, Montserrat (March 23, 2014) – Athletes from all of the island’s school will be given the chance to feel like Commonwealth Champions as they get the chance to pass the Queen’s Baton.

The Queen’s Baton Relay makes it way to Montserrat on Tuesday, March 25, the 50th stop on the global tour leading up to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Students from the Lighthouse Academy are expected to meet the baton when it arrives on board a charter flight at 9:05am at the John A. Osborne Airport. Officials, including His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis and the Honourable Premier Reuben T. Meade, are to be in attendance to welcome the visiting team lead by Fortuna Belrose, Regional Vice President of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

According to Bruce Farara, President of the Montserrat Commonwealth Games Association, the baton is scheduled to visit the community of Lookout where top athletes from the recent sports meets Jordan Ryan and Anicia Turner are to run with the baton.

Special Olympic athletes will have their turn with the baton at the Tropical Mansion Suites.

Athletes from Brades Primary, St. Augustine Primary and the Montserrat Secondary School will continue the relay on Wednesday. The baton will be at the fore of the MSS March Past during the annual sports meet that afternoon and students and members of the public will have another opportunity to take pictures with it.

The baton is scheduled to end its tour of Montserrat on Thursday afternoon.

Montserrat made its debut at the Victoria 1994 Commonwealth Games and has attended every edition of the Games since. Members of the Montserrat Track Alliance with the support of the local Commonwealth Games committee are training to attend the games scheduled for July 23 to August 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
