New school bus fills transportation need

Minister of Education Hon. Nigel Carty and Community Activist Dr. Terrence Drew
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 26, 2014 (SKNIS)  --  The new addition to the fleet of Hyundai School Buses in St. Kitts has come at an opportune time in response to the transportation need of Conaree and surrounding areas says Minister of Education Hon. Nigel Carty.

The Minister stated that when he first came to the Ministry he recognised that there was a void to be filled with respect to the transportation in these areas.

“At mornings, the students from Conaree would have to take their own buses or perhaps walk to school... and so we are very proud that we have been responded to by the Government of Korea to provide us with this [bus].”

Minister Carty also expressed gratitude to several persons, including a former Minister of Government and a community activist for being instrumental in the process of getting the bus.

“Finally we have been able to secure this bus and we want to thank those persons, Cedric Liburd and Dr. Terrence Drew, who have been approaching us and reminding us from time to time of our basic obligation to provide transport to the people of Conaree as we have done for other people in the country,” he noted.

Dr. Drew stated that he is happy that what was once a vision to help the people of Conaree and surrounding areas has now become a reality.

“Coming through this area and meeting the people of Conaree and the young people of Conaree[I observed] the situation that was there with regard to getting students to primary school and high school,” Dr. Drew stated. “It was a very serious issue so I am happy and I’m proud that this void is finally filled and the people of Conaree knows that the Government is working hard and is working on their behalf to ensure that the quality of life for all its people is ensured and secured.”

Minister Carty stated that the provision of the bus is a step in the right direction and it accords with the overall plan of the Government in terms of all they have been doing including infrastructure repairs to schools, the implementation of EduNET and the distribution of laptops to students and teachers to ensure quality education.
