BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) have their eyes firmly fixed on the prize following the second day of the 2012 TDC Inter-School Championships with a nine-gold medal lead on their closest competitor.

Events completed yesterday (Mar. 29) include the 800m Finals, 200m Finals, 400m Hurdles Finals, 3000m and 5 000m Finals Male and Female, Male and Female Under-20 Long Jump, Under-23 Male Discus and the Under-20 Male Shot Put as well as the series of 4x400m Relays.

Standout performers for the 20-time champions Charles E Mills were Krystal Liburd, who outclassed the field to win the Girls Under-18 200m.

The CARIFTA-bound Nathaniel Huggins wowed the large audience with some impressive leaps as he showed his true talent with a leap of 7.25 metres to set an unreachable target for his opponents.

Rhianda Richardson won the Under-16 800m despite a strong Challenge from Verchild’s Shafiqua Maloney, and Tehara Cary winning the Girls 3000m were some of the standouts for CEMSS on a day they dominated.

They also added four medals during the 4x400m series.

The day ended with CEMSS taking 18 gold, 12 silver and six bronze medals, with their closest rivals Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College gaining nine gold, two silver and six bronze medals.

Charlestown Secondary School stood in third position, having bagged seven gold, 11 silver and five bronze medals.

Defending Champions Washington Archibald High School are in fourth position with six gold, 13 silver and 8 bronze, followed by Verchild’s High School with five gold, 10 silver and six bronze.

Despite CEMSS having a commanding lead, the race for supremacy is however still wide open with 49 events to be completed today.

Will last year’s champs WAHS fight back and successfully defend their title, or will CEMSS continue their dominance and run away with it? These questions will be answered in a matter of hours.
